What are the types of GPS Trackers?
There are three distinct types of GPS tracking devices:
Data Loggers:
A Data Logging GPS device generally logs GPS coordinates to a local storage device, SD Card, internal memory. They do not communicate with any remote systems and logged data is generally downloaded for inspection and analysis. With no communication device attached, standalone battery powered devices can function for a longer duration between charges. Some digital cameras also log GPS data and embeds it into the metadata of the image file.
Data Pushers:
A data pusher is the most common type of GPS tracking device and are used extensively for vehicle or personal tracking. A data pushing device may only have limited local storage so GPS data must be transmitted to a remote service. Unlike a Data Logger device, the GPS data generated will still be available even if the GPS tracker is lost or stolen or becomes unrecoverable. TrackMYFleet supports this type of device on its platform.
Data Puller:
GPS data pullers are also known as “GPS transponders”. These are generally used when the location of the device will only be queried on an occasional basis and there is no need to record historical positioning data. The position of the device may be retrieved by SMS message or some other remote triggering method.
