Just like a mobile phone, a GPS tracker requires an active SIM card with a data allowance to transmit its coordinates and other information. Some trackers also allow commands to be sent via SMS.
A typical tracker will consume between 50 MB and 150 MB of data a month. This can vary depending on how often the tracker is configured to report its location or if other information such as battery levels, fuel consumption etc etc is also transmitted.
